What kind of fasteners do I need to attach the extensions to my existing fence?Updated 2 months ago
The Dog Proofer Straight Vertical Fence Extensions and Curved Houdini-Proof Fence Extensions can be mounted to just about any type of existing fence. However, the type of fasteners you will need varies depending on the fence type.
- Chain Link: U-Bolts are recommended for most chain link fences. The size of the U-bolt is dependent on the size(s) of fence posts. In most cases, corners, endpoints, and gate posts are larger than other posts in the fence line. The extension can be secured to a post up to 2-½” in diameter. NOTE: Smallest compatible U-bolt is 1-⅝” (can be used on 1-⅜” posts). We offer a few common sizes of U-Bolts that fit the following post diameter (distance across the post, NOT distance around post - how-to-measure-post.pdf):
- 1-⅜” (1.375”) Round
- Size is not recommended for Dog Proofer Fence Extensions
- 1-⅝” (1.625”) Round
- 2” (2.000”) Round
- 2.5” (2.500”) Round
- 2” Square
- Metal/Aluminum Fence (square posts): Square U-Bolts can be used. The most common size is 2”. Alternative option: Self-tapping screws. These can be used for all extensions (so long as the post is no less than 1-⅝” wide), or in areas where U-bolts might not fit due to fence hardware. #8 screw ½”-¾” long paired with a washer works well for most fences.
- Wood: Lag bolts paired with washers are recommended for securing exetnsions to wooden fence posts. ¼” x 2-3” long lag bolt with washers work well for 4x4 wooden posts.
- Brick/Block: Masonry screws are recommended. If possible, the fastener locations should be aligned with a mortar joint (this allows for easier repair if the system is ever removed). Pre-drill a pilot hole to prevent damage to brick/block, then secure masonry fasteners through the mounting bracket on the extension. ¼” x 1-¾” - 2” masonry screw (such as a Tapcon) paired with a washer is recommended.
- Vinyl/PVC: Dependent on the specific fence. If the fence has a post backing (the material inside the posts) then the fastener type is determined by the backing material. However, most vinyl fences have hollow posts which require the addition of backing material for our system to be installed on the post, leading to a more involved installation process.
