How deep do the posts go into the ground?Updated 2 months ago

The Freestanding DIY Dog Fence includes ground sleeves for anchoring the posts in the ground. This unique component does not require any post hole digging or concrete pouring, but it does need to be driven into the ground.

Fence kits include a separate piece called a driving cap that is set into the top of the ground sleeve to help protect the top and drive the sleeve into the ground with a sledgehammer. The length of the sleeve varies between kit types, as follows:

  • 4.5 ft tall Freestanding DIY Dog Fence sleeves are 24" in total length
  • 6 ft tall Freestanding DIY Dog Fence sleeves are 27" in total length
  • 7 ft tall Escape-Proof Freestanding DIY Dog Fence sleeves are 27" in total length

The top 1.5-2" of the sleeve should be left above ground to provide room for securing self-tapping screws (included with kit) through the sleeve and into the post inside to "lock" everything in place. This means that approximately 22" or 25" of the sleeves are below the ground surface.

NOTE: If you suspect any underground utilities are in the general area where you plan to install the fence, you may choose to call your local authorities to mark their exact locations. Code varies from municipality to municipality on how deep utilities must be buried. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

There are small dimples on the sides of the sleeve that prevent the post itself from sitting all the way in the bottom of the sleeve. This ensures that your posts are all set at the correct finished height, and it also prevents the bottom of the post from sitting in standing water. There are drainage holes in the bottom of the sleeves to prevent stagnant water from sitting inside the sleeves.
