Can this system be used for large (100+ lb) dogs?Updated 2 months ago

Our Freestanding DIY Dog Fence system is available in three height options: 4.5 ft, 6 ft and 7 ft (which includes the escape-proof top).

For large dogs, it is recommended that you use the 6 ft or 7 ft tall versions. These two options come with heavy-duty 1-5/8" diameter fence posts designed to withstand impacts and last for years outdoors.

All fence kits include welded wire mesh fence material. The material has an impact-resistance rating of over 1000 lbs and is installed as two horizontal runs that overlap in the center, with the lower run creating the dig-proof barrier. The mesh features a square 1.7" x 1.7" grid pattern. The individual wire strands have a diameter of about 2.4mm (equivalent to approximately 10/11-gauge wire based on the AWG scale).

Because of these strong and durable materials, the standard fence kit can be used for dogs of all sizes and weights. However, if you have reason to believe your dog may "test" the fence, you may consider a couple of upgrades:

  • Instead of attaching the mesh fence material to the posts with the included heavy-duty zip ties (120# test), you may choose to purchase stronger stainless steel cable ties for this purpose.
  • Instead of securing the upper and lower mesh runs together with the included standard zip ties (50# test), you may choose to purchase our Hog Ringer tool and use the galvanized ring staples to secure the material together.

If your dog has fence aggression tendencies and may try to obsessively claw or chew on the fence itself, then our system may not be a good fit.
