Can the system be used to contain both cats and dogs?Updated 5 months ago

While our standard Freestanding DIY Fence is designed specifically for keeping dogs contained, it is possible to use the fence (or rather, a variation of it) to also contain cats. Because cats tend to be more challenging to contain, it is recommended that the enclosure area uses spring-loaded arms on top in order to be most effective - found on our sister site: PurrfectFence.com. It is possible to use the standard Freestanding Cat Fence as is to contain dogs as well, so long as the dog will not try to chew through or jump against the fence.

However, if your dog might try to chew on or jump against the fence then we do recommend some upgrades to make the fence more durable. There are a couple of options available to you depending on your dog's personality:
  • If your dogs might occasionally jump up on the fence but are not prone to try and climb over or persistently try to escape through or over the fence we can make a few adjustments to the standard Freestanding Cat Fence, including: adding more posts so that they can be closer together than the standard 14 ft distance for cats and upgrade the bottom barrier chew/dig guard so that it runs farther vertically up the fence. These two adjustments can increase the overall durability of the fence for dogs that generally respect a fence boundary but are not prone to climbing, excessive digging, or fence aggression.
  • If you do have concerns about your dog trying to "test" the fence regularly or just prefer an overall heavier-duty option it is possible to combine our 6 ft tall Freestanding Dog Fence with the Purrfect Fence spring-loaded arms on top for protection for your cat. This Freestanding Fence option uses larger diameter posts that are spaced up to 9 feet apart. It will also use heavy-duty welded wire material (the same material used for the chew/dig guard on the cat fence) all the way up to the base of the spring-loaded arms. Then, a poly mesh material is installed on the arms as they do require a flexible material for proper function.
If you are interested in a quote for materials for either of the options above, please feel free to contact us with some additional details of the project including photos of the area that will be enclosed and any measurements/dimensions that you have in mind for the space.
